WaterTech Online: New poll asks about chlorine vs. chloramine

A new WaterTech Online® Reader Poll is asking public water system operators whether their system uses chlorine or chloramine to disinfect its drinking water.

Anyone wishing to respond to the poll can find it immediately by going to the WaterTech Online Web site home page, scrolling down and looking along the right side of the page under “Surveys & Polls.” Answering and submitting an answer requires only a couple of mouse-clicks.

In the latest poll question, posted February 27, the Reader Poll asks: “If you work for a public or community drinking water system (or a public system owned and/or operated by a private company), which of the following applies to the drinking water treated by that system?”

Respondents can choose from among five answer options. They can say their water system: uses chlorine only; uses chloramine only; uses both chlorine and chloramine; is disinfected, but not with chlorine or chloramine; or does not require or use disinfection of any kind.

All responses remain totally anonymous, and respondent e-mail addresses are not used or sold for any marketing or other purpose. Results of the poll, which are unscientific, will be announced by late March on WaterTech Online’s daily news items and in the WaterTech e-News Daily® e-newsletter.

The Berkey water purification systems and other water purification systems do not remove Chloramine.

Reverse Osmosis - No. Salts can be caught by the permeable membranes but chloramine may pass through the membranes.

Most water softeners are not designed to remove chloramine.
